    • So what happens to our standing in the world, now that the candidate is President-elect? Obviously, negative views about America aren't going to change overnight - if they change at all. For instance, some of the instant reactions from the electronic version of the Arab "street" seem decidedly undecided about a president with the middle name Hussein. But judging from the giddy reactions from Kabul to Caracas, America's most powerful IO campaign gets even stronger, when Barack Obama moves from the campaign trail to the White House.

    • Scientists have sequenced the whole genome of a cancer cell for
the first time. By comparing the DNA sequence of cancerous cells taken from a
patient, who died of leukemia in her 50s, with the DNA collected from her
healthy tissue, they identified 10 mutations found only in the cancer cells. The
mutations appear to affect cancer cell growth, as well as response to
      chemotherapy drugs.
    • The new study is different than other recent genomics
studies of cancer, which focused on candidate genes, rather than searching the
entire 20,000 genes of the human genome. (See Cancer Redefined) It is also the first female genome to be sequenced.

    • Black voters accounted for 13% of the electorate, up 2 percentage points from 2004, in surveys of voters as they left the polls. Young voters increased their share from 17% to 18%. The two groups overwhelmingly supported Obama. For black voters, it was nearly unanimous.
    • At polling stations across the country, people said they were concerned about jobs and health care, moral values and experience. Many were first-time voters drawn by the sour economy or Obama's historic quest.
    • Fully 95% of black voters backed Obama, the exit poll showed — breaking the record of 90% for Walter Mondale in 1984. Their 13% share of the electorate was also a record; they'd never before passed 11%. The upshot for 2008: Blacks accounted for 23% of Obama's votes.
