    • In general, we have trouble with things like speed cameras and red light cameras -- both of which don't tend to do much of anything to make the roads safer (rather, there's evidence that they lead to more accidents). The reality is that they are really about boosting revenue for local governments, not about safety -- which explains why plenty of places have been found illegally changing parameters to make them bring in more revenue.

    • It takes ten years or 10,000 hours to become an expert in any field.
    • More recently, during a keynote speech he was giving as part of his latest book tour, I heard a similar claim from presenter extraordinaire Malcolm Gladwell. AFAICT, this claim runs at the centre of Gladwell’s recent book: Outliers: The Story of Success. In fact, it seems that Gladwell uses the same quote from Levitin, on page 40 of Outliers (I just found that out).

    • Many AI researchers and cognitive scientists have argued that analogy is the core of cognition. The most influential work on computational modeling of analogy-making is Structure Mapping Theory (SMT) and its implementation in the Structure Mapping Engine (SME). A limitation of SME is the requirement for complex hand-coded representations. We introduce the Latent Relation Mapping Engine (LRME), which combines ideas from SME and Latent Relational Analysis (LRA) in order to remove the requirement for hand-coded representations. LRME builds analogical mappings between lists of words, using a large corpus of raw text to automatically discover the semantic relations among the words. We evaluate LRME on a set of twenty analogical mapping problems, ten based on scientific analogies and ten based on common metaphors. LRME achieves human-level performance on the twenty problems. We compare LRME with a variety of alternative approaches and find that they are not able to reach the same level of performance.

    • Rise of mobile data/3G in Canada - we see mobile data as being very important everywhere else on the planet and come 2009, we’ll be less than a year away from Vancouver 2010. This means that we’ll have all manner of international handsets roaming around on the various networks starting in 2009. To make them happy, Canada’s mobile data network and rates will have to improve. But at least our data speeds are not that bad right now. Having more players in the wireless market will certainly help as well. It also seems that the telcos are pricing SMS rates way too high and this is going to lead to people using generic data instead - IM or other means of chat.
    • Net neutrality and Copyright - boring topics that will come to the floor as changes here will impact the “utility like” perception that many people have of their broadband connection as well as the feeling that they should be able to do within the walls of their home what they want with that which they pay for (EULA be damned!).

    • You have to love the diagram. What about the 'mega-trends' represented? "The mega-trends are: global connectivity, anxiety, volatility, uncertainty, debt, power shift eastwards, aging, GRIN technologies, digitalisation, climate change and sustainability."

    • Thanks to Janet Clarey's nod to Venkatesh Rao's posts about cloudworkers, a term he coined to replace the anachronistic telecommuter. But he went further and described an approach to life and work that is not locked into the institutions and rituals of the past. This fits my ambivalence to career, pursuing opportunities and interests rather than employment positions. A cloudworker does not need an office nor a title. But that doesn't mean I can't work for people I respect if I choose to do so (as I do now for my PhD supervisor as a researcher).
